Susan Betty Luca, 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 12, 2024 in Newburyport, MA.
She was the daughter of the late Frank J. Coflan and Edith (Miller) Coflan of Wakefield, MA. Susan loved her family dearly and will be greatly missed by all.
Susan was active in the Newburyport community and cherished her many friendships. She was a kind and caring mother and grandmother who fostered creativity, humor and a sense of adventure.
Susan met Richard Luca while they both worked at a popular theme park, Pleasure Island. They married at Richard’s alma mater, Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. After a brief time living in Maryland, Paris, France and Massachusetts, they would settle down and raise their children in Hollis, New Hampshire.
A lover of the arts, music and travel, Susan and Richard enjoyed visiting museums, attending concerts and trying new restaurants, especially in their beloved Paris. A highlight for Susan was taking special trips to visit her children.
Susan graduated from University of Massachusetts Amherst, leading to a successful career as a software design engineer. She achieved many accomplishments, including holding a patent, something she never expected.
Inspired by the landscapes of New England, Susan studied to become an accomplished painter, treasuring time quietly reflecting in her art studio. She was a member of the Newburyport Art Association, and the Newburyport Ten Plein Air Painters. Her paintings are featured at The Inn at Castle Hill, Ipswich, MA and continue to adorn the walls of family, friends and admirers.
Susan will be remembered for her buoyant personality and warm-heartedness.
Susan leaves husband Richard, son Nicolas Luca (wife Sandra), daughter Amy Sanderson (husband Louis) and 2 grandsons, Luca and Anthony Sanderson.
Susan was a devoted sister and beloved Aunt Sue to many. She is survived by her siblings, Joan Crowley, Sandra Martin (Ashton), Marcia VanOlinda (Mark) and Barry Coflan (Christine).
