Stasia (Czajkowski) Malionek, 97, a native and lifelong resident of Newburyport, entered eternal life on May 9, 2025, following a brief period of declining health. Born June 21, 1927, to Adam and Catherine (ChÅ‚opek) Czajkowski, both originally from Poland, Stasia grew up in the South End, attending Saint Louis de Gonzague parochial elementary school and then Newburyport High School, from which she graduated in 1945. In 1952 she married Vincent Malionek of Salem, and in their 27 years of marriage they raised two sons in a three-generation household with her parents. The family moved to the North End in the 1970’s.
She worked at various jobs in and around Newburyport, beginning at the tea room of the Swett-Ilsley House (then known simply as “4 High Road”) in Newbury. After high school, she worked at the CBS Hytron factory, and eventually as an advertising secretary for Towle Silversmiths, a position she held for many years until her retirement and the closure of the factory.
Stasia was a devoted parishioner of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, and active in the Ladies of Christopher sodality. Among the many crafts and hobbies she enjoyed, she was a voracious reader and a steady patron of the Newburyport Public Library. She preserved and handed on a great many ethnic culinary traditions, and was an avid collector of cookbooks. Her most important focus was always her large extended family and circle of friends, with whom she loved to spend time.
Gone before her are her parents; husband Vincent; older half-brothers, Edward (Millie) and Edmond (Ruth); and younger brother William (Peg). Surviving and celebrating her life, love, and memory are her sons, Tom (Judith) of Troy, New York; Daniel (Rochelle) of Newburyport; grandchildren Renata, Paul, Joseph, and Katie; a vast number of in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews; and numerous dear friends of all ages.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 42 Green Street, Newburyport (click for directions) on Thursday, May 15, at 10:30 a.m., with interment at Saint Mary’s Cemetery immediately following. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Stasia’s memory to Immaculate Conception Parish or the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library.
