Sachiko Geekie Obituary

Sachiko (Oki) Geekie, 89, a long time Newburyport resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her daughter’s home in Merrimac, Mass. on. June 21, 2026. Born October 30, 1936 in Iwakuni, Japan, she fell in love with her husband James A. Geekie, Jr. “Jim”, in Yokohama, Japan, while he was stationed as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Sachiko, ‘Sachi” to friends, began her life in America after they married in 1960. They resided in Newburyport for over 60 years where they raised six children.

Sachi and Jim shared a love of the outdoors which they imparted to their children . Springs and Summers were spent fishing together at the Artichoke Reservoir, Pickerel bridge and Plum Island point. She even tried her hand at fly fishing in Pittsburg, NH with flies tied by Jim.

Sachi was blessed with an amazing green thumb. Her garden was filled with wonderful plants, shrubs and trees many gifted from family and friends. Her memory of where they came from and from who, always amazed her daughters. She was especially proud of her Japanese maples, a cherry tree and a four foot bonsai style pine tree which she grew from a pine seedling.

Handmade arts and crafts always enticed Sachi. She was able to master basket weaving, knitting , crocheting, quilting, sewing clothes and water color painting. Her created items were often gifted to others.

Sachi was always up for adventure and travelled extensively with her family and her girlfriends. She vacationed with her friends Rita, Ginny and Maria, whom she met while working at Brush-Wellman company in Newburyport, to the Caribbean, Hawaii and Disney world. Las Vegas was a favorite destination with her best friend Nancy Danielson where they often made significant contributions to the Las Vegas economy . She took a quick trip to France, a long trip to Japan and an even longer trek driving across the Yukon and United States with her husband Jim.

A devoted New England Patriot and Tom Brady fan, Sachi proudly wore her patriot jersey and hat while watching every game.

Often on weekdays you could find Sachi and Nancy playing bingo at either the Amesbury or Salisbury senior center with their close friend Setsu Raymond. Through the years Sachi, her daughter and Setsu were able to enjoy wonderful Japanese luncheons (aka Japanese DVD trading event) planned by her good friend Sumiko Bilson.

Sachi had a wonderful witty sense of humor and always treated everyone with kindness and respect. Upon entering her home she would offer you something to eat or drink until you accepted, always a wonderful hostess she would not sit till everyone was taken care of.

A devoted wife, wonderful mother and loyal friend, Sachiko was deeply loved by her family and friends. She will be missed beyond measure.

A special thanks to Amy Anwyl and staff at Sarah’s Place Too - Adult Day Health Center in Haverhill, Massachusetts, who provided so many activities to brighten Sachi’s life. The kindness shown to Sachiko and Barbara will be forever remembered.

Sachiko was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband Jim in 2019.

She leaves behind her children, son James W. Geekie and his wife Holly of Newmarket, NH, granddaughter Erin Amosun husband Joshua and great grandson Kellan Amosun, grandson James C. Geekie, daughter Barbara Gagnon and her husband Robert of Merrimac, MA, grandson Benjamin Gagnon, daughter Kimberly Lafrance and her husband Richard of Salisbury, MA, grandson Rick Lafrance and partner Sydney Faulkner, granddaugher Tessa Lafrance and fiancée Rachel Maracle, daughter Susan Mitchell and husband Craig of Palm Coast, FL, daughter Tracy Geekie and fiancé James Chambers of Gonic, NH, and daughter Rebecca Geekie of Melrose, MA.
