Ruth O'Connor Obituary

Ruth Ann O’Connor passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025 at Port Rehabilitation and Health Center in Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Born on January 17, 1940, Ruth was the beloved daughter of Ray and Dorothy Russell. A lifelong resident of Newburyport, she grew up on Dove Street as one of eight siblings. Ruth was a proud graduate of Immaculate Conception Grammar School and High School (Class of 1957).

For 63 years Ruth was the devoted wife of Francis O’Connor, former City Marshal.  She was a loving mother to Laurie St. Laurent, Ellen O’Connor, and Michael O’Connor, as well as a dear mother-in-law to Jane (Miller) O’Connor. After dedicating her early years to raising her family, Ruth returned to work and school, finding fulfillment in her roles as a cook at the Park Lunch, and later as a certified medical assistant at Pentucket Medical in Haverhill, Massachusetts, where she worked with Dr. Tatirosian and Dr Wicks until her retirement.  She often spoke fondly of her time working with the staff and patients.

Ruth lived a joyful life centered around family and simple pleasures. She treasured summer days at Plum Island, being a cub scout den mother, curling up with a good James Patterson book and a cup of coffee, playing cards on Saturday nights with family, enjoying Sunday morning coffee and donuts, enjoying brunch with good friends at the Rowley Pancake House, taking joy rides throughout New England and road trips to Florida, and more recently watching "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" every evening with her husband at Port Rehabilitation.

She was a proud grandmother to Herb Heywood (wife Michelle), Tim, Brian, and Allison St. Laurent, Ryan (and wife Chelsey) and Elizabeth O’Connor, and Megan O’Connor Kaiser. She was also blessed with two great-granddaughters, Delilah St. Laurent (mother Heidi St. Laurent) and Susan Jane O’Connor. Ruth also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and family friends.

She is survived by her sister Mary (Russell) Maguire (and brother-in-law Dan), brother David Russell (and sister-in-law Pat), sister-in-law Ann O’Connor, and sister-in-law Claire Russell. Ruth was predeceased by her five older brothers: Raymond (and wife Betty), Jack (and wife Barbara), Edward (and wife Bumpsy), Joseph, and Paul.

Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Port Rehabilitation, especially Jen Bridges C.N.A., for their friendship and care. We also give special thanks to her niece, Jane (Russell) Miller, for her frequent visits, and her roommate, Marnie Butland, for her wonderful care and companionship.

Family and friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday May 30, 2025 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. Her Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 10:00 on Saturday May 31, 2025 at Immaculate Conception Church, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
