Roger W. Foster, Jr., 76, of Newburyport passed away peacefully on February 28th after a 5 year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Roger was a successful entrepreneur, a real estate developer, and an avid sportsman who excelled in sailing, skiing, and rock climbing. He was a voracious reader of all things science and had a deep interest in spiritual development.
Roger was raised in Lunenburg, MA and attended the Eaglebrook and Berkshire Schools before going on to Colby College in Maine. Further studies in Physics at the University of Colorado and Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design showed his wide-ranging interests and capacities. Starting in 1975, Roger played a vital role in the revitalization of downtown Newburyport. When the city was largely comprised of abandoned storefronts and derelict buildings, Roger purchased and refurbished much of what is now the thriving Market Square area. The crown jewel of his development, The Phoenix Room on Inn Street, was a restoration of the Charles Bulfinch original from 1809, and is still in demand as an event venue today.
Later in life, Roger used his interest in science and supply chain management to reinvent himself. In 1994, he founded and became CEO of Cenostar Corporation, an international import/export company for cenospheres, a mined material used in industries from aerospace to energy conservation.
Roger attracted people and maintained friendships across the many aspects of his life. Along with his engagement in the outdoor community, he was a spiritual seeker of boundless curiosity. He spent the last fifteen years studying the Toltec lineage and participating in shamanic practices that further deepened his understanding of purpose and meaning in life. He was instrumental in building a spiritual community on the North Shore.
Roger leaves behind two daughters, Ashley (Josiah) Lilly and Morgan (David) Schroeder as well as three grandchildren, Hunter and Esmee Lilly and Vance Schroeder. He is survived by his two brothers, Scott and Allan Foster, and many nieces, nephews and great nephews. He also leaves behind his companion of ten years, Edith Heyck. Roger was predeceased by his father, Roger W. Foster, and his mother, Merelyn (Mel) Foster.
