Robert “Bob” Joseph Smith, 96 years old, passed away comfortably on Saturday, November 26, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.
Bob is survived by his sister Genevieve Frass and Margarete Waye, his sons, Richard Smith and his wife Nikki, Robert Smith and his wife Molly, David Smith and his wife Anne, Chris Smith and his wife Amy, and son-in-law Raymond Hemond, his grandchildren, Jennifer Tremblay and her husband Derek, Joe Hemond and his wife Marianna, Stephanie Powell and her husband Adam, Patrick Smith and his wife Jenna, Samantha Smith, Sarah Smith, Benjamin Smith and his wife Jesse, Matthew Smith, great-grand children Twyla Hemond, Natashia Hemond, Olivia Powell, Jake Tremblay, Nick Tremblay, Greyson Powell, and Madeline Powell.
Bob was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of fifty years, Charlene Taylor Smith, and his loved daughter Julia Hemond, and his younger brother Joseph Smith.
Bob began a passion for flight early in his life. He attended the Manhattan School of Aviation and Trades in New York learning about the science of flight. He served his country during WWII, entering the Navy in 1944 and received medals for service in the American and European Theaters, as well as Victory and Commendation. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Bob then reentered the Navy for the opportunity to attend pilot training. Shortly after pilot training Bob advanced to Parks College in St. Louis Missouri, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduating, he began working at Westinghouse Electric Corporation (Aviation Gas Turbine Division) in Kansas City Missouri. Bob met Charlene during that time, they then married and moved to Massachusetts where Bob began a long career of thirty-two years in aviation engineering at General Electric in Lynn Massachusetts, retiring in 1987.
Bob continued his lifelong passion for flight, spending time building, designing, modifying, flying and “fixing” model airplanes. He passed his passion for flight on to his children and grandchildren. Bob’s time spent at the model field flying remote controlled airplanes, sharing time, and helping other RC enthusiasts, friends, and family were the happiest of his times.
Bob’s greatest passion, however, was being a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, touching and influencing countless lives, taking on each day with gratitude and a smile. He will truly be missed and will never, ever, be forgotten.
There will be a celebration of life held in Bob’s honor with a visitation from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on, Thursday December 1, 2022 at the Twomey LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St, Newburyport, MA. Bob’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday, December 2, 2022 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 300 Main St, West Newbury, MA 01985 followed by burial at the Bridge Street Cemetery.
