Obituary

Rita Rose York, 97, passed away peacefully on September 1st, 2020.  She was born September 15, 1922 to Amedee and Delia (Gagnon) Gosselin in Newburyport and lived there her entire life.  She was a wonderful woman who was highly active in the community and church. Her grandparents were founding members of St. Louis de Gonzague Church. This church was central to her childhood and adult life. She was an active member of the former St. Louis de Gonzague Church where she was a sacristan for 27 years and headed up the Christmas bazaar for many years. She was a member of and past president of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society, and St. Anne’s Sodality.  She worked at the former Gosselin’s Card and Gift Shop, was a long-time member of the Golden Age Club, and an active volunteer with countless organizations including the Maritime Museum.  Above all, her grandchildren were her greatest loves.

She married Fred B. York in 1941 and had four children.  She is survived by her two daughters, Jacqueline Chapman, and her husband Bruce; Linda York-Tortorici and her husband Michael; her daughter-in law Cheryl York (David York). She was predeceased by her two sons, David, and Ronald as well as her husband Fred.

She leaves grandchildren, Yvette York, Michelle Saboliaskas, Christopher Chapman, Nicholas Chapman, Stephanie Venturini and two step-grandchildren, Laurie O’Brien and Jason Tortorici.  She leaves 5 great-grandsons, Caleb and Noah Saboliaskas, Callen Chapman, Brayden Chapman, and Henry Venturini. There are also 6 step-great grandchildren – Kiersten and Kala O’Brien, and Braiden, Gabriel, Peyton and Gavin Tortorici.
