Richard "Dick" Smith Obituary

Richard “Dick” Smith passed away surrounded by loved ones on January 29th at the age of 82. The son of Kathleen and Frederick Smith, Dick was born and raised in Beverly, MA where he met Karen, his wife of 59 years. The Smiths moved to Newburyport in the early 1970's to raise their family, before retiring to Salisbury Plains.

Dick began his 40 year career at GTE / Osram Sylvania in 1959 where he was an esteemed master maintenance mechanic. A seasoned veteran of the industry, he contributed to production innovation, even traveling to Japan as part of a consulting group.

Lovingly known as “Smith”, his hobbies included snowmobiling and canoeing on Great East Lake, camping and sharing time with friends and family. Later in life he took pride in the care and upkeep of the family property, getting lost in his favorite book and working with his NAPA Auto Parts family after retirement. Most importantly, Dick was devoted to following the interests and accomplishments of his grandchildren.

Dick was a man everyone enjoyed and respected. His life was spent selflessly working toward the continued happiness of his family and friends. His loyalty, work ethic and strength of character will have a lasting impact on his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by those knew and loved him.

Dick is survived by his wife Karen Smith; his son Mark Smith and daughter-in- law Christine and their children Madison and Brendon of Newburyport; and his daughter Stacey Grady and son-in-law Scott, of Hampton, NH.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be announced at a later date. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home is assisting Mr. Smith’s family with his arrangements.
