Newburyport, MA – Richard A. Zartarian Sr., 76, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. He was born to the late Nishan and Annie (Kalashian) Zartarian and raised in Newburyport. He was a graduate of Newburyport High School.
In his early years, Richard owned 20th Century Cleaners and Helen’s Gift Shop in Newburyport with his beloved wife Alice. In his later years, Richard went on to work in the maintenance department of Newburyport Public Schools until his retirement.
Richard was very active in the Newburyport community, taking on the role of Santa Claus in the city’s annual Christmas Eve parade and holiday school visits. He was also an Exhalted Ruler at the Newburyport Elks. Richard and his wife Alice were instrumental in founding and managing the Newburyport Special Needs Summer Program.
Richard was predeceased by his wife Alice (Barrett) Zartarian and is survived by his son, Richard Zartarian, Jr., of New York, his daughter Helen Zartarian of Amesbury, siblings Mark Zartarian of Rye, NH and Margaret VanAmburgh of Newburyport, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial remembrance will be planned at a later date. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Zartarian’s family with his funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Richard’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
