Raymond P. Gibbons, Sr., 87 of Newburyport, MA passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2024. Ray is reunited in Heaven with his best friend and beloved wife of 61 years, Jacqueline L. (Rackley) Gibbons.
Faith, family, and service were most important to Ray. He was an active parishioner in the Immaculate Conception Church since moving to Newburyport in 1978, serving for many years as a lector and Eucharistic Minister. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, volunteered for the Salvation Army, and washed an uncountable number of dishes for Breaking Bread to help the less fortunate enjoy a hot meal.
Sitting with Jackie and enjoying a coffee along Newburyport’s waterfront was a joy for Ray. He looked forward to annual trips to Aruba, was an enormous sports fan, and proud of his Irish heritage. Ray would brag about how good his “boys” were and then took that to the next level with his grandchildren and later soaked in the time he spent with his great grandchildren. Ray leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, hard work, discipline, and extraordinary selflessness.
Ray is the son of the late Thomas and Delia (Cox) Gibbons. He was predeceased by his brothers Thomas, Vincent, and Robert as well as his sisters Mary (Gibbons) O’Donnell and Regina (Gibbons) Brow.
He is survived by his adored children, Raymond P. Gibbons, Jr. of Braintree, MA, Mark Gibbons and his wife Ana of Londonderry, NH, Todd Gibbons and his wife Kimellen of East Kingston, NH and Keith Gibbons and his wife Jennifer of Methuen, MA.
Ray was a loving “Grandpa” to and survived by his seven cherished grandchildren, Michael Gibbons and his wife Tara, Brian Gibbons and his wife Jenny, Connor Gibbons, Jordyn Gibbons, Trevor Gibbons, Jackson Gibbons, and Jacob Gibbons. He was also a great grandfather to four treasured great grandchildren, Ty Gibbons, Brody Gibbons, Casey Gibbons, and Hadley Gibbons.
He is also survived by his brother Kevin Gibbons of California and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to Ray’s Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM on Monday September 9, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport. Burial will be private at a later date. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Gibbons’ family with his funeral arrangements.
