Phyllis Frances Hayes, passed away Wednesday evening November 8, 2023 at Port Healthcare in Newburyport. She was born the oldest of 5 siblings on January 31, 1938 in Boston, MA to the late Philip and A. Helen (Smith) Hayes.
In her early work life, she managed the office of the chaotic and challenging MacIssac Construction Company where she learned her amazing ability to multi-task, focus on details, and solve most problems that came her way. Although not an Accountant by trade, she had a noggin for numbers, and would supplement her income doing taxes for individuals and small businesses. From the construction world, she joined the US Postal Service in the 1970’s, retiring in 1999.
In 1958, at the age of 20, she and a group of friends founded the Ski Bee Ski Club in North Conway, NH where she developed her lifelong love of alpine skiing. She only grudgingly stopped when she was 75 after being diagnosed with PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease) which made skiing too difficult to continue.
Always very well organized and very social she was on numerous committees, mostly related to the Eastern Interclub Ski League or the National Association of Postal Supervisors, where she was often the Chairperson.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Hayes; siblings, Barbara (Hayes) Raso and her husband Joseph, and Mary (Hayes) Williams; and sister-in-law, Veronica (Leahy) Hayes. She was predeceased by her brothers, Peter and Robert Hayes; and brother-in-law, Theodore Williams.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday November 15, 2023 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. Services and burial will be private.
