Peter Joseph Edwards

On Monday, February 21, 2022, Peter Joseph Edwards passed away at home just before his 83rd birthday with family and friends by his side.

Peter was born in Dublin, Ireland to parents Esther (Healy) and Patrick Edwards, who predeceased him.  Sisters Mary “Maureen” and Bridget “Bridie” also predeceased Peter.  Siblings Frank, David, Geraldine, and Thomas mourn the passing of their brother.

Peter began an apprenticeship as a painter at the age of 14, in Dublin where he first learned to make a proper pot of tea over an open peat fire (a task he failed miserably on his first try).  After emigrating to the US in the seventies Peter distinguished himself as a Master Craftsman in specialty painting, included gilding, wood graining and special finishes while he was employed by the ML McDonald a Union Painting Company.  Ever humble, when asked, Peter always described himself simply as a house painter.

A man of few words, Peter was known for his contagious laugh and his quiet insightful observations.  Peter met his soulmate, Jeannette Emma Lazarus, in 1987 and they married and lived and worked together for the rest of their careers.  Peter is survived by his beloved daughter, Kimberly Edwards, from his first marriage with Molly Edwards as well as Jeannette’s four children Philip, Gregory, Richard and Carolyn Conrad, as well as many grandchildren.

In retirement, Peter enjoyed spending time with his “Emma”, perfecting his woodworking skills and teaching himself framing in order to showcase Jeannette’s paintings.  

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Peter’s life to be held at the First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist Church of Newburyport on April 2, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private at a later date.The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Edwards’ family with his arrangements.
