Paul M. Ruest, 89, of Diamond Point, New York, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025 in Newburyport, MA. Paul was born on October 11, 1935 in Swansea, MA., the only child to Christine (Demarco) and Paul E. Ruest. He graduated from Joseph Case High School in 1953 where he was awarded the Danford Foundation Award for Scholastic and Athletic Achievements. In 1958 he graduated first in a class of 35 engineers from Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a B.S. in Marine Engineering. Paul went on to serve in the U.S. Navy where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander.He served in the Navy from 1958 to 1961and continued on to serve in the Navy Reserve until 1969.
Paul was a natural athlete, having played basketball and baseball in school and was an avid golfer for most of his life.He was an active member of the Franklin Country Club and the Franklin Lions Club in Franklin, MA. He was a long time employee of Mason-Neilan achieving general manager of the regulator division in Norwood, MA. Towards the end of his career he was employed at Standard Thompson.
In retirement Paul traveled the world including a number of cruises, trips to Switzerland, and Croatia.He enjoyed being a snowbird with his condo in Estero, FL for the winter time and the Diamond Point home overlooking Lake George for the summer.He enjoyed taking his boat out on the lake and picnicking on the many islands.
Paul is survived by his long time partner Helen Whitaker of Diamond Point, NY, his daughters, Karen Johnson & her husband Mark of Georgetown, MA., Michele Ruest of Douglas, MA.;and two grandchildren, Michael Johnson & his wife Laura of West Chesterfield, VA and Erin Johnson of Georgetown, MA.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Christine and Paul, his wife Claire (Cormier), and his son Michael A. Ruest.
A grave side ceremony will take place at Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River, MA. on Tuesday October 21, 2025 at Noon. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Ruest’s family with his arrangements.
