Patricia Ellen Donahue Gabriel, whose life was a testament to unwavering faith and boundless love, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 9, 2024. Her journey on this earth was marked by deep devotion to her family, friends, and faith, leaving an indelible legacy of kindness, compassion, and grace.
Her beautiful smile illuminated the world with light and joy, and for 81 years, she offered unwavering support to those in need. Born at the start of World War II, her formative years were shaped by the challenges of the era, instilling in her a remarkable resilience and adaptability. This period also fostered in her a lifelong commitment to frugality and resourcefulness.
As a young mother, Patricia, affectionately known as "Pat," often found creative ways to save money, clipping coupons, collecting Green Stamps, and carefully peeling off stickers that reflected price increases from coffee, powdered milk, and canned green beans at the First National supermarket on Pond Street in Newburyport.
A lifelong resident of Newburyport, Pat dedicated the early years of her life to nurturing her five children. She was a constant presence at school events, eagerly chaperoning field trips and never missing a single baseball or basketball game. Faith was a cornerstone of her family life, and she ensured that her children attended church every week. Amid her busy schedule, Pat found joy and camaraderie in a weekly coffee klatch with fellow young mothers, where they shared stories, laughter, and the trials and triumphs of motherhood.
Patricia was a proud graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Newburyport, MA, and the Beverly School of Nursing. After raising her children, she pursued further education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from New England College. Her dedication to helping others was evident in her career, first as a nurse and later as a sexual assault investigator for the police departments in Amesbury and Newburyport.
After her divorce and with her children grown, Pat found new purpose in her responsibilities as a sexual assault investigator. While many might find the work too challenging and emotionally taxing, she embraced it with unwavering dedication and profound empathy. Her commitment to seeking justice for survivors and providing them with the support they needed was a true testament to her strength and compassion.
In addition to her demanding career, Pat cultivated a passion for travel, exploring the rich cultures of Ireland, France, Spain, Guinea-Conakry in West Africa, and many other places.
Pat is survived by her five children and their spouses: Frederick Gabriel-Deveau of Warren, CT; James Gabriel and Donna Gabriel of Newburyport, MA; Catherine Gabriel-Heusser and Robert Heusser of Merrimac, MA; Susan Lane of Newburyport, MA; and Cynthia Walsh and Austin Walsh of West Newbury, MA.
She was the beloved grandmother of 16 grandchildren: Samuel Gabriel-Deveau, Jeremiah Gabriel-Deveau, Caleb Gabriel-Deveau, and Elijah Gabriel-Deveau; Jenna Gabriel, Ryan Gabriel, Emma Gabriel; Lexie Heusser, Nathan Heusser, Sophia Heusser, Jake Lane, Bridget Lane, Ella Lane, Charlie Walsh, Henry Walsh, Sebastian Walsh. Pat also cherished her role as a great-grandmother to her one great-grandchild, Anna Dos Santos.
In addition to her immediate family, Pat was predeceased by her dear companion, Leonard Chaisson, who passed away in January 2024. Together, they shared many years of companionship, laughter, and love.
She is also survived by her brother and his wife, John and Kim Donahue of Truro, MA, as well as by many nieces and nephews – all of whom she loved dearly.
Her legacy of love and service will be remembered by all who were fortunate to know her.
Family and friends may call on Saturday August 17, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High Street Newburyport, MA 01950.
