NEWBURYPORT - Mona passed away peacefully on Feb. 27 at Port Healthcare at the age of 95. She was born in Newburyport on Oct. 2, 1928 to Hugh and Jessie (McCarthy) McLaughlin. She grew up on Pine Hill Road with her siblings having free reign over the Moseley Estate across the street. Mona was predeceased by her four sisters and a brother: Jean Vallette, Patricia Spalding, Theresa Rowell, Agnes Harvey and David McLaughlin.
On April 19, 1949, Mona wedded Kenneth L. Spalding. The two went on to enjoy 51 years of marriage before Kenneth passed away. The couple bought their dream home on Broad Street. They lovingly restored the house and raised their four children there. She is survived by her children Jean Berkenbush (Scott), of West Newbury, Ma., Kenneth Spalding (Patricia), of Newburyport, Ma., Maureen Becker of Westbrook, Me., and Christopher Spalding of Smithfield, Va.
When her children had grown, Mona returned to school and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. She then began her career as a realtor and opened the successful Mona’s Realty in Newburyport garnering the Realtor of the Year Award four times.
Mona lived a life of service to her community and as such was a member of many organizations not the least of which was her membership in Friends of Maudslay State Park. She also was a devout and lifelong parishioner at the Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport.
After retirement, Mona became a resident of Nichols Village in Groveland and in later years resided at Port Healthcare in Newburyport where she enjoyed many close friendships.
Mona also enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and her great grandchildren including Jonathan Spalding (Victoria), Vincent Spalding (Maggie), Katherine Clark (Peter), Elizabeth Vangelist (Michael), Courtney Fisher, Shawn Becker, Stephanie Spalding and Olivia Spalding, Vivian Spalding, Josie Spalding, Christopher Spalding, Eliot Smith, Holly Smith and Ada Clark.
Calling hours are on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St., Newburyport, Ma. 01950. Her Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 42 Green St., Newburyport, Ma. Burial will be private at a later date.
