West Newbury - Always one to keep us on our toes, Mike Hines, 36, died Sunday, August 30 after a brief but characteristically stubborn battle with a sudden, unexpected illness.
Never one to mince words, Mike lived by a creed of radical candor. But once you got used to it — and it took some getting used to — you saw how big his love could be.
Mike lived to be fishing in the Merrimack or skiing Shawnee Peak; to be losing to his wife in Jeopardy or drinking whiskey with Peter, Brent, and the Wes crew; and, most of all, to be in the presence of his girls, adoring family, and friends that are like family — most likely, giving everyone a hard time.
He was an exceptional hockey player at St. John’s Preparatory School and Phillips Exeter Academy (where he “did a little grad work”), and he was a program-changing lacrosse All-American at Wesleyan University. But, he found his greatest role later in life as a dad to his two beautiful daughters, Mary Claire (5) and Warner (2).
He undoubtedly experienced a joyous reunion last Sunday with his brother Derek, who preceded him in death. Mike leaves behind a number of family and close friends — more than he realized — who will greatly miss his uncompromising adherence to self and the way that his eyes twinkled when he spoke. Among them are the love of his life and wife, Elizabeth, and daughters Mary Claire and Warner of West Newbury; parents Steven and Susan Hines of Newburyport; sister Ashley Randi and brother-in-law Matt Randi, and niece Anne Louise Randi of West Newbury; and brother Trevor Hines and sister-in-law Carter Hines of Newmarket, NH.
A private ceremony will be held Friday, September 4. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Michael’s family with his funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the 1st Lieutenant Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund or St. John’s Preparatory School.
