Melvin W. Russell

Melvin W. Russell, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving American Training family at High Pointe House in Haverhill, MA on Sunday April 17, 2022. He was born in Newburyport, MA on April 2, 1938 to the late Arthur and Lucy (Chauncey) Russell. Raised and educated in Newburyport, Melvin attended Newburyport Public Schools- Kelley School and Davenport School. Melvin attended Opportunity Works in Newburyport since 1975.

Melvin was well known in the Newburyport area. He enjoyed walking (or riding his bike) downtown and visiting local shops. Melvin loved the community meeting new people.  You could always find Melvin with a smile on his face, he had a love for life and it shined through with his sense of humor and infectious laugh.  Melvin enjoyed time in the kitchen with his housemates and colleagues, making brownies or making a can of beans for lunch, he loved to sit and have a conversation, he was a man of many questions.  Melvin touched the lives of anyone who was lucky enough to cross his path, his quick wit, smile and big heart made anyone feel welcome in his presence.

Melvin is survived by his American Training Family, especially his housemates (Chris, Jimmy, Hawley, and Steven)  and colleagues that supported him. His Opportunity Works Family since 1975. He is a tremendous loss for all that knew him for a minute or years.

Family and friends are invited to Melvin’s Graveside Service 10:00 AM on Thursday May 5, 2022 at Union Cemetery in Amesbury. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting with Mr. Russell’s arrangements.
