Mary Ann Pagley Obituary

Mary Ann (Pettingell) Pagley, 92, formerly of Newburyport, Newbury, and Amesbury passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 5, 2021 at Life Care Center of Stoneham, just shy of her 93 birthday.
Born at home in Newburyport just before the beginning of the Great Depression, during a blizzard in January, 1929, to Moses and Marion (Teel) Pettingell, she was a proud native of Newburyport. She attended Newburyport schools, graduating from Newburyport High School in the Class of 1947.
In the spring of 1950, she married the love of her life, John Pagley in the Manse of the Old South Church. She worked at Towle Manufacturing, Hytrone and for her husbands business, North Shore Electrical Contractors, all in Newburyport. In addition, for many years she volunteered her time at the MSPCC thrift store on State Street. A lifelong member of the Old South Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday school there, sang in the choir and served on the Board of Deacons.
She and John were able to travel extensively, visiting every state in the US (with the exception of Alaska), Canada and Mexico, as well as numerous destinations in Europe and South America. Although she loved to travel, she loved returning home even more. Being a military wife, she found herself transplanted to such places as Colorado, Mississippi, Maine, Germany, and Cape Cod before finally settling back in her home town to raise her family.
She was an avid walker and absolutely adored any type of dance. She could often be seen walking High Street with her childhood friend Phyllis Packer no matter the weather conditions. They were especially a familiar sight walking during snowstorms and blizzards, cheerfully calling out greetings to snowplows and shovelers alike. A longtime member of Jo Bridge’s Line Dancers, she enjoyed tap, jazz, country line dance and her favorite, Greek line dancing. At home she would very often be found gleefully practicing her dance steps or just hoofing it around the kitchen, with or without music.
Affectionately known as “Nana Mary” by all who knew her, she had an infectious laugh and a smile that could (and did) light up a room and time spent with her family was heaven on earth.
She is survived by her son Dana Pagley and his wife Kim of Newbury; her daughter Jane Pagley of Amesbury; her daughter-in-law Deb Pagley of Amesbury; her beloved grandchildren: Lianne Pagley and her partner Ron Lever of Salisbury; Laura Pagley and her husband Shaun Patterson of Nashville, TN; Lindsey Pagley and her partner Andy Palmer of Nashville, TN; and John Tyler Pagley and his wife Katie Loveday Pagley of Merrimac, MA  as well as great grandchildren Margot Pagley Patterson and Norman Pagley Palmer both of Nashville, TN. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 54 years, John Pagley; her son Stephen Pagley; her brother H. Everett Pettingell and her cherished dogs Murray, Leo & Merlin who were constant companions.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all staff at Life Care Center, Stoneham for the gentile, compassionate, loving and utterly professional care they provided and will be eternally grateful that Mary was allowed to pass peacefully and with the dignity and grace she so very much deserved.
Family and friends are invited to her Funeral Service to be held at 10:30 AM on Monday December 20, 2021 at the Old South Church followed by burial at Oakhill Cemetery both in Newburyport.
