Louis Masiello Obituary

Louis D. Masiello passed away at his home in Salisbury, MA on November 23, 2022.

Lou was born in Chelsea, MA on March 31, 1938 and was the son of the late Louis A. Masiello and Antoinette A. (Montecalvo) Masiello.

Lou is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Dianne (Noe) Masiello; their three children, Louis C. Masiello, and his wife Renee of Holliston, MA, Gina Britton, and her husband David of Medway, MA, and Candice Skiba, and her husband Chris of Newburyport, MA.  He also leaves eight cherished grandchildren; Anthony, Molly, Joseph, Jake, Louis, Patrick, Thomas, and William.

Lou graduated in 1956 from Lawrence High School, then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Engineering from Lowell Technological Institute in 1960, and a Master’s of Public Administration from Northeastern University in 1975.

He served in the Air Force Reserve from 1960 to 1965, then began his forty years of service to the United States Defense Department as a civilian engineer, mostly in the Air Force Electronic Systems Center (ESC) at Hanscom Air Force Base. During that time, Lou was one of eleven Air Force civilian employees selected to attend the Air Force Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base.  He managed the acquisition of various Air Force command, control, and communications systems for use by the US Air Force and US allied nations. He worked on ground, shipboard, and airborne systems, including eighteen years assigned to the US Air Force Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS).   Lou retired in 2002 and was honored with the Outstanding Civilian Service to the Department of the Air Force Medal.

His commitment to public service extended beyond the Air Force to his community as well. He has served on many boards, commissions, and non-profit service organizations. He is a past chairman of the Salisbury Board of Health, a former Secretary of the Board of Directors for the SCTV, a member of the Board of Directors of the Salisbury Beach Betterment Association, a member of the Advisory Committee to the Salisbury Beach Partnership, and was a past volunteer for Roof Overhead Collaborative, an organization which serves the needs of the homeless in the greater Newburyport area.  Lou was a volunteer at Bread & Roses, and a dedicated parishioner of Star of the Sea Church. He has served as a member and vice chair of the Salisbury Planning Board. His work on the Salisbury Planning Board led him to also being appointed to the position of Salisbury Commissioner on the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission. He was also a long-time member of the Newburyport based discussion group known as New and Views – an involvement he treasured.  Lou has long had an interest in good government and Democratic Party politics. For many years he has been an activist in the Democratic Party and for 14 years served as Chair of the Salisbury Democratic Town Committee.

Lou enjoyed playing drums for most of his life, but his avocation was his keen interest in history, foreign policy, politics and his community.
