With great sadness, and much love, we share the loss of our father and beloved Papa, Louis Barcellona, 93, to cancer. He was born August 8,1931 in Lawrence, MA to Sebastiana and Domenic Barcellona. He attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1949. In 1951, he proudly joined the United States Navy serving as an Engineman upon the U.S.S. Atka, an Icebreaker, paving the way through Antarctica. His time in the Navy took him to many countries around the world. He shared with us many stories of playing football on icebergs, bringing penguins on the ship that were destined for U.S. Zoos, traveling up and down the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, expeditions toward both the North and South Poles, South America, and most notably, the Panama Canal. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1955 and remained in the Navy reserves until 1960. He continued his service as a Civilian Mechanical Engineer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard maintaining the periscope systems on Submarines. This job took him on many sea trials and trips to naval bases from San Diego to Scotland. He met so many incredible servicemen along the way and for years enjoyed going to all the reunions around the country to reminisce and share stories. He retired after 30 years and enjoyed his love of fishing and attending his grandchildren's many sporting and school events.
He met the love of his life, Betty (MacLellan) Barcellona, at Salisbury Beach Reservation. They shared 61 years together before her passing in 2012. They loved roller skating and shared a lifelong passion for ballroom dancing and most importantly, the family they raised together in Salisbury. He leaves behind their children Louis Jr, Mary Rose, and Dawn and their adoring grandchildren Dominique, Anthony, Chad, Brock (Leeanne) and Jack, and great granddaughters Sophia and Bella, and many nieces, nephews, friends and special neighbors. Louis was predeceased by his parents and his four siblings, Paul, Gasparino, Rosario and Rosalie.
Family and friends are invited to attend his Graveside Service at the Rye Central Cemetery in Rye, NH at 11:00 am on Friday September 27, 2024. A celebration of life will follow at the family home. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Barcellona’s family with his arrangements.
