Lorraine “Tootsie” Murphy, 88 of Newburyport, MA died on Thursday May 12, 2022 at Kaplan Family Hospice House. She was the wife of the late Edward J. Murphy. Tootsie was born prematurely at 3 lbs on November 1, 1933 in Amesbury, MA, the daughter of the late Eva and Roland Allard. That fighting spirit followed her until her death.
She is survived by her children Deborah and husband Richard Oliver of Winchester MA., Lynn Matt and Chris Ciulla of Stoneham MA., Diane and her husband Michael Hume of Hampton NH., Leeann and her husband Elmer Sylvester of Amesbury MA., and her sister Leola Trudell of Woburn MA. She was predeceased by her brother George Allard of Sacramento CA. Tootsie was the proud grandmother of Brittany Hatfield, Courtney Lewis, Tony Matt, Alissa Matt, Jamie Coates, the late Taylor Clement, Kali Hume, Chelsea Sylvester, and Danielle Knight. She was the proud and loving "Nana Toots" to 10 great grandchildren.
Tootsie was a graduate of Amesbury High School class of 1952. A proud Amesbury resident who moved to Newburyport after her high school years, she never forgot her roots. She loved to regale her family with her accomplishments as head cheerleader of Amesbury's historic Thanksgiving victory over Newburyport 99-6 in 1951.
A 50 year leader of the Wednesday morning coffee bowling league in Amesbury, she was a retired veterinarian assistant for Amesbury animal hospital.
Tootsie was a cheerleader for her grandchildrens' activities as well as all Boston sports. Never would a summer go by without seeing her at the beach or poolside with grandchildren in tow.
A vibrant spirit, Tootsie missed the love of her life Ed, with whom she spent 50 years of marriage. Together they loved their Coca Cola work trips, gardening, family cookouts, watching and playing sports. That void was filled by her loving, ever growing family who miss her dearly.
Services and burial will be private. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. Murphy’s family with her arrangements.
