Leslie "D.J." Jay, Jr. Obituary

Leslie McDonald Jay, Jr. "D.J." of Newburyport and formerly of Lynnfield passed away on December 20, 2023 at the age of 73. He was the son of Leslie M. Jay and Claire Wing Jay of Lynnfield. Donnie attended Lynnfield High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology. He spent his early career being mentored by Royal Barry Wills until going out on his own and starting Brettonwood Development contracting and building many fine homes. He was a very talented builder and made many good friends for life in the process. D.J. is survived by his two sons, Tyler and Carter Jay, their mother Dawn McCandless and their step dad Kevin Belisle all of Newburyport. Donnie was a loving brother to his sister Cathy Madden and her husband Ed of West Newbury and his sister Tamsen Almeida and husband Scott and their two children Catherine and Lauren of Reading MA; his maternal aunt Constance Bradbury and her husband Robert of Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as several cousins. He was an avid hiker bagging peaks for many years. D.J. loved to travel and cook. He created many binders filled with his favorite recipes and often took photos to tease his friends and family. He had many lifelong friendships including Allen Castine of Haverhill, his "brother from another mother" David Jackson of Marblehead and his dear friends Leo Byron and Marcia Khron of Boxford. His beloved companion Ann West of Haverhill was by his side day and night throughout his illness. They shared their love of the outdoors and the mountains of New Hampshire with their dog Sammy.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on January 17, 2023 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 from 12:30-2:30pm. Following at 3 pm there will be a Service at the Belleville Congregational Church 300 High St. Newburyport. Burial will be private at a later date.
