Leonard Chaisson Obituary

Leonard Joseph Chaisson, 84, passed away on January 03, 2024 at Benchmark at Rye Senior Living facility in Rye, NH. He passed peacefully, surrounded by family.

He was the son of F. Arthur and Irene (Froton) Chaisson on August 30, 1939 in Newburyport.

One of 12 children, he attended Newburyport High School, where he played football, and graduated in 1959.

Len grew up on the Merrimack River and helped his father at a young age to assist & eventually operate the family charter boats from the North End Boat Club, practically in their backyard.

Lennie met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Hannan, and they were married on June 24th, 1961.

He joined the United States Coast Guard in 1960 and served four years. He traveled to Europe, crossing the Atlantic aboard a USCG cutter.

In 1964, he joined the Newburyport Fire Department, serving over 40 years. He was a founding member of the first public safety SCUBA team in the area.

Leonard also started several businesses over the years, including Colonial Auto Body at his home garage on Marlboro St. He and his brother in law then opened Newburyport Fiberglass Supply, doing auto & boat repairs and also had a marine supply store and towing company.

Len & Barbara raised 4 children in Newburyport and went on many boating trips around the area on different boats over the years. He passed his love for boating to his kids.

Leonard had a mechanical & engineering knack for fixing & building things. He was truly a jack of all trades. He also was a great story & joke teller. He grew up in a then tight knit Newburyport community where everyone had a nickname. We loved to hear him talk to the many people he did & try to guess which nickname applied to whom.

He was a member of the North End Boat Club for 64 years and was involved in other groups and associations related to his various jobs.

After he retired from the Fire Department in 2004, he enjoyed working at the family compound in Salisbury. He worked the land, puttered around the large garage, building and fixing things for his granddaughters. Len & Barb spent 10 happy years there, hosting many family parties & events.

Leonard is survived by his four children. Jeffrey & wife Kimberly, Gregory, Kathy and husband Patrick, and Stephen and wife Cherice. Grandchildren Brianna, Brandi, Caitlyn, Victoria, Mackenzie, Amy, Howard & Ryan.

He is survived by his siblings, Irene Chrisham, Arthur & Patty, Paul, Lawrence, Carolyn & Dave Shepard, Catherine & Scott Jackson, Elizabeth & Blynn Tilley, sister-in-law Janet Vitale, and close companion Patty Gabriel.

He was preceded in death by his beloved & treasured love of his life, Barbara. in 2013, and his parents, brother Gilbert, and sisters Suzanne Reed, Patricia Fern and Anne Marie Manson. His brothers-in law Robert Crisham, Oscar Fern, Donald Manson and Johnny Vitale, and sisters-in- law Carol and Andrea.
