L. Rita (Studer) Shay

L. Rita Shay, RN, 95, a resident of Seabrook died early Thursday evening March 26, 2020 at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill. She was born on May 22, 1924 in Lowell, MA to the late William and Marie (Quessy) Studer. Rita was raised in Amesbury and graduated from Amesbury High School, Class of 1942. She continued her education at Salem Hospital School of Nursing graduating as a Registered Nurse.

Following a career in nursing, Rita worked as a medical secretary at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport until her retirement in 1994. She continued to volunteer at the hospital for more than 20 years. Rita enjoyed traveling with her late husband Edward. They visited Ireland, the Caribbean, Alaska, and Hawaii among other destinations around the globe. She also enjoyed Wii Bowling and playing Bingo with friends.

She is survived by her sons, John E. Shay of Hampton, NH; James T. Shay and his wife Deborah of Marblehead, MA; Paul D. Shay and his wife Mary of Andover, MA; daughter-in-law Holly J. Shay and her husband Richard J. Scuzzarella of Newburyport, MA; granddaughters Jessica and Colleen Shay as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Rita was predeceased by her son Michael W. Shay; grandson Sgt. Jordan M. Shay and her brothers Francis B. Studer and William H. Studer.

Due to the current state of health affairs there will be a private graveside service for Rita at St. Joseph Cemetery in Amesbury where she will be laid to rest along side her loving husband. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. Shay’s family with her funeral arrangements. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rita’s name to The American Cancer Society.
