Kenneth Morris Obituary

Kenneth Alden Morris, 93, husband of Jean L. (Murphy) Morris, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 14, 2023, at Beverly Hospital following a brief illness.  Born on August 29, 1929, Ken was a Newburyport native and the son of the late Nolan R., Sr. and Leonie (St. Cyr) Morris.

Ken was a graduate of Newburyport High School and Boston University alumnus.  After completing Officer Candidate School in 1953, he served in the Army as a 2nd lieutenant.

It is at Newburyport High School that Ken met his future wife, Jean.  They celebrated 70+ years of marriage raising two daughters Kathleen Ells and her husband Jonathan of Amesbury, MA and Marcia Morris of Danvers, MA.  Ken is survived by his three grandchildren Zachary Ells and his wife Kate Ells of Laverock, PA; Sarah Ells and her husband Brian Goodhue of Philadelphia, PA; and Hannah Ells of Boston and her fiancé Jacob Ammon as well as three great-grandchildren Lucy, Zachary, Jr. and Peter.  He is also survived by his sister Louise (Morris) O’Bara and her husband John O’Bara of North Hampton, NH and brother-in-law Robert Murphy and his wife Janet Murphy of Newburyport, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his brothers Nolan R. Morris, Jr. formerly of Newburyport and George M. Morris, formerly of Columbia, Maine.

Ken worked in education insurance as a vice president at Knight’s Insurance in Boston.  He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and Cursillo community and served as a Eucharistic Minister and catechism teacher at Immaculate Conception Parish.

Through the years, Ken’s favorite pastimes changed … running, golf, crossword puzzles, Sudoku and jigsaw puzzles.  What never changed was his interest in food!

Ken is described by his grandchildren as thoughtful, wise, patient and hard working – and a bit of a jokester.  We are grateful for the gift of his gentle and generous spirit.

Visiting hours will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22, 2023 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. and burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newburyport.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
