Joseph P. Fitzgerald of Newburyport, MA., died peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the age of 72 after a long illness.
Born in Somerville on May 12, 1951, he was the son of the late Albert F. and Mary E. Fitzgerald.
He is survived by his siblings Cornelia Fitzgerald of Cambridge, Ann Jepsen and her husband Chris of Belmont and John Fitzgerald and his wife Anne of West Newbury; as well as a brother-in-law, John Ryder of Waltham. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Fitzgerald of Arlington and Julia Mulkerin and her husband John of Winchester.
Joseph was a graduate of Matignon High School in Cambridge and The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. It was during his year abroad in Vienna that his lifelong love of travel took hold and he journeyed extensively with family and friends. A man of quick wit, he always had a quip to add to any conversation and enliven many a dinner party.
A devoted uncle, he took great delight in the lives of his nieces and nephews and their children.
Joseph worked for more than 50 years at his family’s company, Fitzgerald Tile, a ceramic tile distributorship early on in Woburn and more recently in North Reading. He was the heart and soul of purchasing, getting to know visiting salespeople and always asking about their lives and remembering their families. A kind man, he took time to listen to all. He will be missed.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday February 8, 2024 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. His Graveside Service will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery on Friday February 9, 2024 at 10:00 AM.
