John H. Ronan, 93, of Newburyport passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025 at Advinacare/Country Center Newburyport. He was the husband of Frances G. (Kelleher) Ronan and they shared 66 years of marriage.
Born in Newburyport on November 25, 1931, Jack was the son of the late James H. and Catherine L. (Shea) Ronan. Jack was a graduate of Newburyport High School, class of 1949. He also attended Salem State University in Salem, MA . Jack Graduated in 1953, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and Boston University with a Degree of Master of the Arts.
He was a Veteran of the Korean War and served in Japan with the U.S. Army MAP Service. From 1956-1969, Mr. Ronan was employed as a Claims Adjuster and Supervisor by the Travelers Insurance Co. in Lynn and Boston. From 1970 until his retirement in 1990, he was employed as a Federal Probation and Parole Officer. He was assigned to the U.S. District Court in Boston.
He served five years as a member of the Newburyport Civil Defense and was a longtime member of the Board for the Newburyport Council on Aging. Mr. Ronan was very active in senior activities and was credited with being the locator of the Senior Community Center on High St. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Amesbury Country Club. He coached youth baseball and hockey in Newburyport for many years. He climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan, several of the Presidential Peaks in New Hampshire and Mt. Katahdin in Maine.
Jack was well known for his quick wit. He had some fluency in Japanese, Spanish, and French. His hobbies were vegetable and flower gardening, woodworking, chess and spending time at a summer house in Raymond, NH.
He is survived by his wife; a son, John J. Ronan of Kennesaw, GA; daughter, Theresa K. Ronan of Newburyport, MA; grandchildren, Kamalea and Meganne Janvrin, Krystal Sawyer and Heather Spurr; as well as 13 great grandchildren.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday February 6, 2025 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. His Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday February 7, 2025 at Immaculate Conception Church, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Newburyport.
