John "Jack" Gagné Obituary

On Wednesday, October 18, 2023, John “Jack” A. Gagné passed away peacefully at his home in Amesbury, MA with his loving family by his side. He was 86 years old and the beloved husband of 58 years to Kathleen (née. Fournier) of Newburyport, MA.  Jack leaves behind his daughter Paula (partner Phil Spaulding) of Mt. Airy, NC and three sons: Peter of Natick, MA and Gary (wife Blanca) of San Diego, CA and Gregory (wife Raquel) of Cooper City, FL.  Jack also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Danielle, Derek, Natalie, Evan, and Nadia.

Jack was born in 1937 to Julia (née. O’Connell) and Arthur Gagné in Exeter, NH.  Jack was raised in Newburyport and lived there for 74 years.  He was a 1955 graduate of the Immaculate Conception High School.  Jack served in the US Army from 1960 to 1963 and later graduated from Boston College.  For over 35 years, Jack was an auditor in the insurance industry.  In retirement, Jack and his wife spent their winter months in Englewood, FL.

Jack and Kathleen raised their four children in Newburyport.  They were members of the Immaculate Conception Church and sang in the choir for many years.  Jack coached all his kids at the Newburyport Pioneer League and served as Secretary of the league.  Jack was instrumental in organizing the first girls’ softball league at the Pioneer League.  An avid antique car collector and restorer, Jack spent many years organizing the antique car displays at Olde Fashioned Sunday and drove his cars in the Yankee Homecoming parades. Jack was part of the barber shop quartet “The Joppa Flats” of Newburyport and the singing group “The Lemon Drops” of Englewood. A highlight of his life was traveling to Ireland with his sister where they met a few of their Irish relatives.

A huge Boston sports fan, Jack loved watching the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, and Celtics and was very fond of Boston College sports especially BC football. Jack also enjoyed golfing with friends.

Family and friends always looked forward to chatting with Jack at summer get-togethers at the family’s “Saltair” Cottage on Plum Island.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, his sister Ann Marie (née. Gagné) Bennett, his aunt Mary O’Connell, and his uncle John O’Connell.  In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Jack leaves behind several in-laws, cousins and many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newburyport.  There are no public calling hours.  A memorial mass will be held at a later date. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Gagné’s family with his arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Immaculate Conception Church of Newburyport or The CatholicTV Network of Watertown, MA in Jack’s memory.
