John Silva, Jr.

John Silva Jr., 65 of Salisbury, MA was born on April 14, 1959 in Cambridge, MA and died unexpectedly on July 12, 2024. John grew up in Newburyport and graduated from Newburyport High School in 1977 where he was a standout hockey player.

John worked in various fields throughout his career. He started in hazardous waste removal and later transitioned to maintenance and facilities management. John was employed by Benchmark Senior Living at Haverhill Crossings where he loved his work family and the residents.

John met his wife, Deb, April 13, 1977 the night before his 18th birthday. They enjoyed camping in the White Mountains, canoeing, fishing, and cruising around in his Dodge Darts listening to the music of bands they saw in concert. John and Deb got married on June 16, 1985 and danced their first dance to Heatwave’s Always and Forever.

John always knew how to lighten the mood and make people laugh with his extravagant stories and larger than life personality. Big John, Chumley, and Bamps were some of the loving nicknames he enjoyed being called. John’s hobbies included golf, going to the racetrack, fishing, boating, scuba diving, and bird watching. He loved feeding the hummingbirds and watching them from his recliner. These are all things he passed on to his sons, John and Matt, throughout their childhood in between coaching their various sports teams. He always looked forward to his annual Aruba and Myrtle Beach trip with friends and family. John's favorite thing of all was being a Bampy and spending time with his grandchildren and family.

John was a pillar in the local sports community. He was President of Triton Youth Hockey for many years. John was also very involved in Salisbury Youth Baseball League and the Merrimack Valley Umpire Association. He coached youth baseball, basketball, hockey, and golf. John had a major impact on the lives of many young athletes and their families.

John is survived by his wife of 39 years Deborah Silva of Salisbury; Son John Silva III and wife Nicole, of Salisbury; Son Matthew Silva and wife Katie, of Haverhill; and six grandchildren Isabella, John IV, Lilliana, Josephine, Maverick, and Theodore Silva. He was very close to his mother in-law Raylene Proctor and her husband David of Seabrook.

John is survived by Father, John Silva Sr. of Newburyport; Sister, Margaret Eaton and her husband David of Newburyport; brother in-law David Zinck of Newburyport; and brothers Kenneth, David, Michael and his wife Deb Barbour. He was predeceased by his mother Collette Silva, sister Mary Zinck, and brother Marc Barbour of Newburyport.
