John Joseph Short Jr., 64, of Newburyport, MA, passed away unexpectedly on October 25 2023. Born in Medford, MA on January 30, 1959, John was raised in Saugus, graduating in 1976. He continued his education at Boston University, earning his bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1980. Upon graduation, he began a 40-year career in the software industry before his retirement in 2021, ending his career as Director of Healthcare for UKG.
John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Ann Marie Short (Cirurso), sons Gary (Krissia) and Gregory (Yanci), brother Jeffrey, mother-in-law Lois Cirurso, granddaughters Cayleigh, Michell, Daniela, Angelina, and Yuvanna, and his ten nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his father John “Jack” Short, mother Antoinette (Rossi) Short, and father-in-law Anthony Cirurso.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, John was known for putting his loved ones above all else. Whether it was playing guitar for his granddaughters, traveling to their softball games, or cooking for his guests, John thrived on making others happy. With his passion for athletics and coaching, he touched the lives of the countless athletes he coached at the Pioneer League, Nock Middle School, and during his many years as the summer league basketball coach for Newburyport High School. Upon retirement, John also donated his time to serving on the Board of Directors at the Boys and Girls Club in Salisbury. Known for his sense of humor and quick wit, John’s affable personality brought levity anywhere he went. An avid Boston sports fan, John was known to friends as a “sports encyclopedia”. Loving to travel, he and Ann shared many trips together, as well as spending time at their second home in Clearwater Beach, FL. John was a mentor to many, as his selfless nature and innate work ethic were an inspiration to friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances alike. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
