John T. Meade, 90 of Kingston, NH, native of Newburyport MA, passed away after a brief illness on January 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Johnny, fondly known as Yanni, was born to Frederick Meade and Catherine Chagros in Newburyport, MA on May 6, 1933.
Growing up in the south end of Newburyport, he enjoyed the simple life, spending most of his days outside playing ball with his friends and helping at his grandparents’ store.
John attended Newburyport High School where he excelled at many sports. Upon graduation, John joined the Navy and proudly served our country for 4 years in the Korean War.
Following his term of enlistment, he started his beautiful family with former wife Cynthia Meade and settled back in Newburyport.
John worked at Western Electric and retired at age 55. Living on Seabrook Beach, John didn’t take retirement lightly. He found odd jobs and any form of exercise, including running, spending time at the beach, riding his bicycle, and going to the gym.
His love of sports and exercise followed him throughout his life and was passed on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He especially enjoyed doing things for his family. He always offered to paint, build, assemble, or fix anything. He proudly attended every sports event that his grandchildren participated in.
One of John’s gifts was his storytelling and connections. Wherever he went or whoever he met, he would start the conversation with, “Are you from Newburyport?”. That was the game opener. From there, the conversation flowed until he made a “connection” and that would carry his legacy.
John is survived by his brother Chris Chagros and his wife Linda of Exeter NH, His five daughters and their families. Teresa Amato of Amesbury, her children Fernando, Monica, Nicoletta, and Alyssa. Joanne Merrow and her husband Chris of Amesbury, their children Syrena and Peter. Linda Gamache of Byfield, her children Joseph Jr. and Devin Wetherbee, Angela and her husband Daniel Connelly. Marie Bahan and her husband Scott of Kingston NH, their children Tess and Morgann. Gina Wilson and her husband Jim of Amesbury.
5 wonderful great-grandchildren, Mickey, Elena, Marilyn, Angelina, John Joseph (JJ) who all adored him. Numerous nieces and nephews. Many dear friends including those who he considered family, Jack Welch, Bob Quinn and hundreds of “connections”.
Family and Friends may call from 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Friday January 12, 2024 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. Services and burial will be private.
