John P. Knapp, Jr. 91, died Wednesday afternoon at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. He was a lifelong resident of Newburyport born on January 25, 1930 to the late John and Sofia (Wujcik) Knapp. He attended of Newburyport High School and following his graduation he enlisted in the U.S Army and served our country proudly during the Korean War. John was stationed in Yokohama, Japan serving under the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. He was also stationed in the far east and served with the Japanese Logistical Command and rose to the rank of Corporal at the time of his honorable discharge in 1953.
Upon his return home John was employed at CBS Hytron for 13 years as a carpenter in the maintenance department. He was then employed for 24 years by Towle Silversmith in the case room, making displays for Towle’s wholesalers and retailers to promote the sale of the Silverware. John was a lifelong parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport.
John is survived by his nieces and nephews, Edward Knapp, Jr. and his wife Julie of Stratham, NH, Matthew Knapp of Marblehead, MA, Ronald Small of Chester, NH, Thomas Small and his wife Linda of East Kingston, NH, Bruce Small and his wife Beverly of Seabrook, NH, and Cathy Burns of Somersworth, NH; as well as many grand nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his siblings, Edward J. Knapp and his wife Victoria of Newburyport, MA, Helen Small and her husband Sam of Seabrook, NH, and Stella Makowiec and her husband John of Newburyport, MA.
Services and burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newburyport will be private. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Knapp’s family with his funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
