Obituary

John M. Hirschfeld, 69, of Newburyport, passed on April 26, 2021, peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Janice, daughter Lisa and her husband Steve Bartholomew, son John and his wife Lisa, grandchildren Leo and Claire Bartholomew, siblings Sharon Westrick, Joyce Coe and husband Al, Jane McGuirk and husband JB, Steven and wife Linda, and Brian and wife Susan, aunt Mary Harrington, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents, Patricia and John.

John was born on December 7, 1951 in Washington, DC, and raised in Beverly, MA.  He and his family moved to Newburyport in 1988 and he resided there until his death. He was a co-owner & operator of a welding supply & industrial gases family business until his retirement in 2019.

John was an uncommonly kind man who lived life to the fullest with no regrets. His family was the light of his life. John was a devoted husband to his wife of 39 years, Janice, and a patient, always-supportive father and grandfather.

It is difficult to overstate John’s impact on those in his life, as all who knew him were affected by his warmth, vibrant sense of humor, and fun-loving spirit. He enjoyed hosting poolside barbecues at the family home, Patriots games, and family vacations, and was an avid tennis player for over 50 years.

John’s family is comforted by these memories and will miss him dearly.

The family held private graveside services at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport and will be hosting a celebration of his life this summer, per John’s request. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 assisted Mr. Hirschfeld’s family with his funeral arrangements.
