John Alex Gallant, Sr.

John Alex Gallant Sr., 87, of Newbury, MA, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, in his home, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on September 10, 1937, in Ipswich, MA to Albany and Hilda (Saunders) Gallant.

From a young age, John exemplified a strong work ethic, working at various local farms and boatyards on the Parker River. A graduate of Newburyport High School, class of 1956, John went on to work as a union carpenter and in road construction while also working his way up to the position of Fire Chief for the Newbury Volunteer Fire Department. In 1975, he opened J. Gallant Pool, which will celebrate fifty years as a family-owned and operated business this spring.

Throughout his long life, John enjoyed boating, skiing, and collecting antique cars. He was happiest when supporting and celebrating the accomplishments of his grandchildren and loved to attend their many sporting events. Family and friends knew his abrupt humor was a sign of the love he had for those he cared for most.

John is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of sixty-seven years, Gail (Pollard) Gallant. He also leaves behind his three children and their spouses, Stephanie and Michael Sergi, Kristin and Kevin Cannon, Jay and Deb Gallant: grandchildren Gabrielle and Will Patton, Katherine and Lauren Sergi, Jordan, Reese, Morgan and Riley Gallant: great-grandson Alex Patton: sister, Cecile (Gallant) Pimental: close family friends Bruce and Janice Irving and their sons, Jackson and Carson, whom John considered his grandsons.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday March 24, 2025 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. Services and burial will be private.
