Joanne (Violette) Hogan

June 15, 1943 ~ October 27, 2021 (age 78)

Obituary

Joanne (Violette) Hogan, age 78, a resident of Byfield, MA since 1964, passed away on October 27th after being diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer two months ago.  She was the beloved wife of Barbara J. Luby.  Born in Lynn on June 15, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Madeline (Marcheterre) and Alfred Violette.

Joanne raised four children while becoming more involved in her church.  She taught CCD, became a Religious Ed Coordinator, invested herself in the Charismatic Renewal and took on the role of Youth Minister at the La Salette Shrine (formerly of Ipswich, MA).  Despite the challenges of nurturing a family while working, she managed to go to school part-time and get her Bachelor’s degree from Lesley College in 1996.

Joanne will be fondly remembered for her giving heart, strength of spirit, and her strong belief that one only needs two articles of the same clothing (“one to wear and one to wash!”).  She was a fierce advocate for even the smallest injustice she saw.  She wasn’t afraid to speak up no matter how uncomfortably it might be received, and wrote many letters published by the Boston Globe, standing up for what she believed was decent and right.

She enjoyed knitting for the prayer shawl ministry, toiling in her many haphazardly-planted gardens, playing a role on the board of the La Salette Faith Community, and doing anything she could to make her children’s and grandchildren’s lives a little happier.

She was also happily obsessed with books, primarily non-fiction, and always hoped her room in Heaven would be a library!

Joanne seemed to have been born already downloaded with a deep faith in God.  When her heart was broken by the end of her first marriage and she never thought she would be happy again, in 1993 she sought healing in a month-long retreat at the Center of Action & Contemplation in Albuquerque, NM, which is rooted in the traditions of Jesus, St. Francis, Buddha, and Native Spirituality. It was here she unexpectedly met the person that would help her find happiness again, especially since it turned out to be a woman!

Joanne is survived by her loving wife, Barb, children Patricia Craig, Rebecca Anderson, Andrew Hogan, and Thaddeus Hogan and their partners; sisters Alfreda Violette Nishan and Dianne Violette Littlehale and their families; three grandchildren, Madeleine Anderson, and Ebin and Cashel Hogan, and the entire Luby/Morrison family.

Joanne had a deep belief in the beautiful, powerful spirit that flows from community gathering together for a shared experience.  We look forward to such when we memorialize and celebrate her life at a future date.  In the meantime, donations may be made to Lazarus House Ministries, PO Box 408, Lawrence, MA 01842.
