Janet Gurski Obituary

Janet Ann Gurski (née Cecilia), age 91, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2024, surrounded by family in Portsmouth, NH.

Born to John and Irene Cecilia on June 7, 1933, in North Bergen, NJ, Janet grew up with a deep sense of love, family, and commitment that she carried throughout her life and passed on to the generations that survive her. On April 28, 1952, she married her beloved husband, Theodore S. Gurski, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and partnership until his untimely passing on September 18, 1993. Together, they built a family legacy filled with warmth, joy, and enduring traditions that carried Janet through the many stages of her life as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all. She expressed her commitment to family at long, food-filled tables for holiday gatherings in her home, at dozens (probably hundreds) of games, meets, plays and recitals and through hundreds (maybe thousands?!) of hand-written-never-miss-mostly-on-time holiday, birthday, and graduation cards across the decades.  She was a considerate and caring woman with a quiet strength and insatiable curiosity. She was quick to tears of joy due to the abundance of good fortune that surrounded her and had a constant and ready gratitude for all of her blessings that we all have learned from. Her caring and kindness did not prevent her from dominating her children or grandchildren or anyone else “lucky” enough to join her at 7:30 PM any weeknight for her daily dose of Jeopardy.

Janet is survived by her four cherished daughters: Irene Ladd, wife of Ken, Debra Hale, wife of Bill, Donna Balboni, wife of Chuck, and Diane Kimball, wife of Bruce. She was a devoted grandmother to 10 grandchildren - Brian, Steven, Christopher, Kevin, Alanna, Jaclyn, Brianna, Baleigh, Alyssa, and Alexa and great-grandmother to 20 great-grandchildren - Avery, Taylor, Hayden, Dillon, Isabella, Graciella, Collette, Mateo, Adrian, Coltin, Tyler, Teague, Caiden, Noah, Logan, Aurora, Barrett, Bowen, Mathilde (with number 20 due in January) all of whom brought her immense pride and joy. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her for her unwavering love for family, her ability to bring people together, and her dedication to creating a home filled with warmth and laughter.
