James "Jim" Gallagher Obituary

James J. Gallagher, passed away May 29th following a lengthy illness.  Jim was born August 8, 1941 in Newburyport graduating from Newburyport High in 1959.  Following graduation Jim enlisted into the US Air Force serving in Korea and England; following his discharge Jim attended U Mass Amherst.

Jim worked at Western Electric until his retirement in 1996. He was an active member of the Newburyport Jaycees helping the organization with their July 4th carnival at Cashman Park, working the refreshment stand during Old Fashion Sunday as well as working the refreshment stand at Newburyport High during football games.  He served one term as the President.

Jim was a member of the American Yacht Club for 55 years serving on many volunteer and elected committees including the Executive Committee; he also served as Secretary for three years.  Jim and his wife Sue spent many hours sailing and racing with their two sons and on their own.  They spent several summers traveling the Maine Coast as well as Cape Cod and the islands; their farthest travel took them to Shelter Island, NY.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Susanne (Corey) Gallagher, his sons Patrick Gallagher and his wife Elif and David Gallagher and his wife Joy, his two granddaughters Caitlin and Ashley Gallagher who were the apple of his eye.  He loved to play in the pool with Caitlin and Ashley always telling them to look out for a hippopotamus. Jim also leaves behind his sisters Catherine Gossman of Mulberry, Florida and Patricia Eaton of Seabrook, New Hampshire, a brother John Gallagher and his wife Susan of Fort Smith Arkansas as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jeremiah & Anita (Chatigny) Gallagher, Jim was predeceased by his sister Thelma Bartley, brothers-in-law Gunther Gossman, Edward Bartley and Wallace Eaton.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Newburyport. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Gallagher’s family with his funeral arrangements.
