James Rambus Obituary

James Demetrois Rambus a resident of Plum Island, died Sunday January 8, 2023 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire. He was born on October 30, 1935 in Peabody, MA to the late Peter and Efthemia (Nicolaides) Rambus. He was raised in Peabody before his family moved to Ferndale, Michigan where he graduated from Lincoln High School.

In 1954, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and it became his lifelong career. He was positioned in several stations in Michigan, Boston and Cape Cod before relocating to the Coast Guard Station Merrimack River in Newburyport. He retired from service, after 31 years, in Newburyport as a Boatswain's Mate Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was an avid hotrod enthusiast. He always had a project ongoing, MGs and especially Corvette were a couple of his favorites. He was an active member of the American Legion, Post #150 and a member of the Neptune Club of Newburyport. Jim loved the water, loved spending time on boats, loved the beach and loved watching sunsets.

Jim is survived by his long-term partner of nearly 30 years, Sally Dow of Plum Island, and her children and grandchildren;  daughter, Pamela Rambus (William Andrews), of Arizona; sister in-law, nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael Rambus and their parents.  As the "unofficial mayor" of Plum Island, he leaves behind many close friends, with stories of his generosity and kindheartedness!
