Gerald Volpone, Sr. Obituary

Gerald S. Volpone Sr., 85, passed peacefully with his family after a brief illness on March 11, 2021.  Gerald was born and raised in Newburyport, graduated from NHS with the Class of 1953. He was an avid sports fan – playing both Varsity Football and Baseball, while also involved with the Student Council and the yearbook, En-Aitch-Ess.  He enlisted in the Army and served four years before going to the National Guard at Fort Devens.  After his military service, he bought a home in Newburyport, married his best friend, Jane (Lynch) Volpone and together they started a family.   Known for his strong work ethic, Gerry worked two jobs most of his life.  Gerry was an Installer for New England Telephone for 30 years before retiring.  Gerry towed for Volpone Ford Motor Company before the pair opened their own company in 1976, Volpone Towing Service, which will celebrate 45 years of business this July 2021.  He became a member of the Statewide Towing Association and participated and attended many tow shows in New England, NY, and Florida. Gerry served as Chairman of the Newburyport Water Board, achieved the 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus and a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club.  Gerry was an avid skier in his younger years and enjoyed golfing, and he always loved time with friends discussing the latest news over coffee.  He loved rooting for the local teams and his beloved Notre Dame Football, especially when they were playing against the University of Michigan.  Gerry’s ready smile and kind words for all will be greatly missed.

Gerry leaves behind his beloved wife and partner of 60 years, Jane and their four children; Gerald Jr. of Newburyport, Mary Kathryn of West Stockbridge, MA, Michael and his wife Kathleen of Byfield, and William and his wife Robin of Newbury; nine grandchildren – Andy, Patrick, Kellianne, Ryan, Erin, Benjamin, Meghan, Paige and Thomas, and three great-granddaughters – Mellodi, Story and Adeline.  Gerry was the oldest of seven siblings, survived by five: Charles of Scituate, Donna of Newburyport, Anne and her husband Jack Card of Brockton, Carlie Lewis of Seabrook, NH and Judy and her husband Robert Solazzo of Newburyport and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Alice (Donovan) Volpone of Newburyport, his brother, Norman of Salisbury, MA and brother-in-law Raymond Lewis of Seabrook, NH.
