Surrounded by his loving family, Frederick “Fred” Stephen Powers Jr., age 86, passed away in Newburyport, MA. on Sunday, November 6, 2022. Fred was born in Methuen to the late Sarah and Fredrick Powers. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence. In 1957, Fred married Anne Chaput and they raised their five children in Andover.
Fred spent most of his career as an electrical superintendent with Manzi Electric. For 10 years, he worked at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant and was a proud member of the IBEW Local 103. He later joined Sachs Electrical, which afforded him and Anne the opportunity to travel across the country for projects in New Hampshire, New Jersey, Arizona, Missouri and Nevada. Fred also served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve.
An avid sportsman, Fred loved tuna fishing, deer and moose hunting, and boating, especially while living in Kittery, Maine. Over several decades, Fred owned and operated dozens of boats along the banks of the Merrimack River. He spent most summers aboard the Seeker, Reel Time or Freedom catching stripers. He and Anne also spent nearly 20 years wintering at the Village of Holiday Lake in Port Charlotte, Fla. Affectionately known as Pop-pop, Fred enjoyed playing Forty-Fives with his grandchildren and hitting the casino with Anne. He celebrated a final winning trip to Encore with his family just three days before his passing.
Fred will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Anne; their children, MaryAnne (Powers) and her husband John Ronan of Wolfeboro, N.H., Doreen Powers of Atkinson, N.H., Christine Powers of Haverhill, Mass., Kathleen (Powers) Amesoeder of Andover, Mass., and Michael and his wife Karen Powers of Haverhill, Mass.; his sister, Dolores Hewett of Salem, N.H.; his grandchildren, Jennifer, John, Timothy, Kristin, Stacy, Victor, Brielle, Philip, Samantha and Mitchell; his five great grandchildren; and his beloved black labrador retriever, Molly.
The Powers family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Port Healthcare Center in Newburyport who provided exceptional care for Fred over the past few months.
