Forrest Stanwood Obituary

Forrest Kimball Stanwood passed away peacefully at home on Friday February 3, 2023 at the age of 85. Forrest, born on October 1, 1937, was a lifelong native of Newburyport and proud “Joppyite”. He is the son of the late Raymond and Caddie and brother to the late Janice, Raymond and George. He graduated from Newburyport High School in 1955. He then joined the United States Army, becoming an 058 Morse Code Intercept Operator for the Army Security Agency (ASA), from 1955-1959. Upon discharge, Forrest had various jobs in the electro-plating field including his own electro-plating company “Alter Finishing”. He also worked at Digital, the Newburyport WasteWater Treatment Plant where he held and maintained one of very few Grade 6 License in the state, then later with Gould Shawmut where he retired in 1995.

Forrest was known as “Pup” to those who were closest to him.  He loved sitting on “Our Bench” at the boardwalk, where he would stay for hours talking with friends and meeting new ones.  Pup worked at the Newburyport Senior Community Center 3 days a week and spent a lot of time playing pool and beating son Bobo often and also chatting in the lobby where many stories were shared. Pup loved to bake and hand out his (and Mim’s) now famous banana bread to the Police and Fire Stations, The Senior Center, and of course the family got their fair share, he even made sure the rubbish pick up guys got theirs.

Pup’s most famous motto was “Family First”.  Their home on Barton Street was always the place to gather, where many card games were played (45, Scram and Cribbage), stories were shared, meals were had and beer and wine was consumed. His favorite was playing Cribbage on the front porch with “his lady.” He looked forward to his Sunday visits with his niece Melissa (Murphy) Vespa and her husband Jon. He used to enjoy traveling to visit his two sons David and Robert in North Carolina. Pup was also known for his MANY one liners, “Get up and get-a-goin!” and “Cell Phones are just a fad, they won't last”, and “It's way over my head” if he didn’t understand something just to name a few.

Forrest lived a wonderful life and he will be incredibly missed but his legacy and the many life lessons he instilled upon many will live on.  He was a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather who rarely missed a sporting or school event. When we were growing up you could always find him on the sidelines or in the stands with his camera.

He is predeceased by his son Kevin and his grandson Shawn.  Forrest is survived by his wife Jo Ann (Cutter) of 63 years. His daughter Lisa Wile and her husband Robert.  Son David and his wife Myriam.  Daughter Susan Brown-Walton and her husband Paul, Son Robert “Bobo'' and his wife Linnie. Pup adored his nine grandchildren, Rachael, Matthew, Cooper, Riley, Carym, George, Sarah, Jack and Celest. He also has three great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Harrison and Sadie, whom he loved spoiling with donuts.

We are grateful and thankful for the help that the Visiting Angels of Newburyport and Merrimac Valley Hospice provided to our family.

The family has chosen to hold a private service for Forrest at the Twomey, LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home, and he will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery; and then in June a celebration of his life.

In Lieu of flowers the family requests making a donation to the Newburyport Senior Center (https://www.cityofnewburyport.com/council-on-aging), where he loved spending his free time.
