Elizabeth Stone Obituary

Elizabeth V. Stone, 88, died Thursday morning March 18, 2021 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen. She was born in Newburyport on August 13, 1932 to the late Ralph and Winifred (Black) VanAmburg and attended Newburyport High School.

Betty married the late Benjamin “Bill” Smolski in 1949 and raised their 3 children together until his death in 2005. She later married Joseph E. Stone, Jr. and enjoyed 5 years together until his death in 2012. Elizabeth was primarily a homemaker her entire life as well as a waitress for many local restaurants including Spuds and the Old Salt. 

Nothing gave her more joy than spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a devout faith in God and was a member and volunteer at Byfield Paris Church. She also enjoyed walking on the beach and throughout Newburyport. 

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Gale Colby of Amesbury, and Carol Melville and her husband Rick of Merrimac; grandchildren, Keith and Mai Colby of Brookline, Kim Colby of Somerville, Mike and Kristen Smolski of Amesbury, Ben and Aileen Smolski of Amesbury, Rachel and Mike Mezzetti of Amesbury, Stephen and Sarah Melville of Salisbury, and Kayla Melville of Merrimac; great grandsons, Hunter, Ben, Tommy, Timmy, Andrew, Owen, and Callen; sister, Mabel Jancewicz, whom she loved dearly; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her former husbands and parents she was predeceased by her beloved son Tom Smolski; and siblings, Helen Rowe, June VanAmburg, and Ralph VanAmburg.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday March 24, 2021 from 9:30 to 11:30 AM at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. THERE IS NO LONGER ANY PARKING AVAILABLE BEHIND THE FUNERAL HOME PER ORDER OF THE CITY OF NEWBURYPORT. Her Funeral Service and burial will be private at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made Betty’s name to the Byfield Parish Church.
