Eleanor Mary Hay (78) of Newbury, MA passed away on September 16, 2023, surrounded by family. Eleanor was born in Salem, MA and grew up in Marblehead, MA. She traveled the world and lived in Washington, DC, New Haven, CT, Ithaca, NY and Oxford, England before returning to Massachusetts to settle in Newbury.
Eleanor was a kind and generous soul. She dedicated her life to caring for others as a mother, a nana, a sister, an aunt, a mother-in-law, a sister-in-law, a nurse, a friend, a neighbor and a pet-sitter. She consistently put everyone else’s needs before hers and was incapable of finding fault in anyone. She greeted everyone with a warm smile and, by example, taught others how to love unconditionally and without bounds.
Eleanor’s passion was her family. She also enjoyed reading, birding, gardening, cooking, walking in the woods, exploring new places, puzzles and art galleries.
Eleanor is survived by her sister, Irene Johnson (Richard), her children, Sharon Hay (Dan), Nancy Hay (Christopher), Michael Hay (Carey), her grandchildren, Nicholas, Owen, Clara and PJ, her sister-in-law, Eileen McCarthy, her four-legged grandchildren, Ginger, Winnie and Cash and numerous well-loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Helen McCarthy, her brothers, Fred and J. Robert McCarthy, her sisters-in-law Rhonda and Ellie McCarthy, and her nephew Brian McCarthy.
Eleanor's family will be hosting a remembrance service on September 29, 2023 at the Mass Audubon – Joppa Flats Education Center from 1-4pm. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. Hay’s family with her arrangements.
