E. Gregory McDermott Obituary

E. Gregory McDermott of Newburyport, MA, died on Thursday, Oct. 17 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Greg was born on March 12, 1946 to the late Edward and Mary (Horgan) McDermott of Haverhill, MA. He was the beloved younger brother of Margaret "Peggy" McDermott of Ipswich, MA.

A graduate of Saint John's Seminary in Boston, Greg spent most of his life working with foster children and their families. At the time of his retirement, he was CEO of Dare Family Services, a private non-profit social service agency based in Somerville, MA.

Greg was a devoted husband to Kathleen (Doherty) McDermott for 43 years until her death in 2021. Greg and Katy loved hosting family and friends at their home in Newburyport and on their boat, the “Kathleen Ann." They shared an interest in travel, returning to their favorite destinations of St. Maarten and Bermuda year after year. In his spare time, Greg enjoyed scuba diving, photography, and taking his Corvette for drives along the coast. A huge fan of Bob Dylan, Greg played guitar in a folk band in his younger years.

Greg is survived by his sister Peggy and sisters-in-laws, Elinor Quill, Maureen Doherty, CSJ, Terese Kennealy, and Joanne Doherty, and his brothers-in-law, Joseph Doherty and John MacPhee. He will be remembered fondly by more than 50 nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
