Dorothy Cahill Obituary

Dorothy Ann Jones Cahill passed away peacefully on October 16, 2022. She was born in Amesbury on March 1, 1927 to Harriett Burnette Goodrich and Stanley Milton Jones of Amesbury. She was raised in Amesbury attending Horace Mann School and graduated from Amesbury High School Class of 1945. As a teenager she worked at Hoyt's Peanut Butter Factory on Oakland Street and Kresge's in downtown Amesbury. She married Robert Edward Cahill on May 16, 1948 in Amesbury. They were married for 48 years until his passing in 1996.  After her marriage she lived in Newburyport raising her six children on Prospect Street. She  worked at New England Telephone on Green Street retiring in 1989 after 38 years. Dottie made many good friends at the phone company with whom she stayed in contact with after retiring and often attended the phone company's  retirement luncheons. In her retirement years she volunteered at the Firehouse ticket office and the Anna Jaques gift shop. She also worked at Seaport  Antiques in downtown Newburyport.

Dottie was an avid reader and had many interests. She made quilts, did needlepoint, crewel and knitted many blankets and sweaters for her family. She loved to sew making clothes for herself and her daughters. One of Dottie's pleasures was traveling to visit her children and grandchildren who lived out of state and out of the country. She made trips to Hawaii, California, Oklahoma, New Orleans, Florida, Virginia, Ireland, the Dominican Republican and Venezuela. She doted on her grandchildren and great grandchildren making clothes and quilts for them or buying them little gifts. They were often at her house visiting "nana" as she was affectionately called and a name she never tired of hearing. They loved her immensely and she loved them back.  Dottie was the true matriarch of the Cahill family.

She was the beloved mother to six children, 13 grandchildren, and 21 great grand children. She is survived by her loving children:  Lawrence Cahill and wife Joy, Mary Louise Welch, Deborah Murphy and husband Kevin, Matthew Cahill and wife Maria, Brian Cahill and wife Janis, Mark Cahill and wife Sharon. Her loving grandchildren: Mark Cahill and wife Kristin, Lt. Col. Matthew Cahill and wife Nicky, Jessica Welch and husband Tim Kachel, Melissa Murphy and husband Evan Becker, Kelly Moore and husband Nick, Tammy Meikle and husband Ken, Ashlie Hargenrater and husband Greg, Tobin Famatiga, Samantha Church and husband Josh, Payson Cahill, Bryce Cahill, GSgt. Robert Cahill and wife Meghan and Kelsey Cahill along with her great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Shirley Hart and Marjorie Butland and her brother Leon Smith and wife Sandy and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Cahill, her sisters Barbara Cox and Sally Teel, and her brother Merrill Smith.
