David W. McLaughlin, aged 92, passed peacefully on April 20, 2022, with his loving family at his side.
Born in Newburyport, MA, on February 15, 1930, David was the son of Hugh A. McLaughlin and Jessie A. McCarthy. He was a longtime resident of Newton, NH, living with his family in a home he built on Country Pond.
He spent part of his youth working at Old Town Hill Farm in Newbury, MA, and on the grounds of the Maudslay estate in Newburyport. David graduated from Newburyport High School in 1948. He worked as a silversmith at Towle Manufacturing Co. in Newburyport, attending night courses at Boston University. David then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving primarily at Grenier Field in Manchester, NH, and on Adak Island, Alaska.
David enjoyed a 55-year career in the transportation industry, driving tractor trailers and hauling freight to points all over New England and beyond. He worked locally for Salisbury Tank and Steel, Graf Bros., and AEL Services/Mobile Storage. He was a proud 29-year member of Teamsters Local 437.
David was happiest in his garden, growing vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruits; he loved cooking and canning to preserve his harvest each year. He loved jazz and swing music, taking day trips throughout New Hampshire – especially to Wolfeboro - and spending time with his grandson, Ryan. He collected and restored vintage John Deere tractors and was a member of the East Coast Antique Tractor Club. David was known as the kindest of gentlemen who would do anything for his family or friends, and he will be deeply missed.
David leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Judith (Colell) McLaughlin; daughter Patricia McLaughlin of Newton; daughter Anne M. Guertin and her husband Scott , and grandson Ryan David Guertin of Amesbury; sisters Theresa Rowell of Hampton, NH, and Mona Spalding; extended family, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings: sisters Jean Vallette, J. Patricia Spalding and Agnes Harvey, and a brother, Robert.
Family and friends are welcome to attend David’s Funeral Service on Saturday morning, April 30, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport. Visitation will be on Friday, April 29 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Twomey, LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home in Newburyport. Interment will be at the (new) St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dover, NH. THERE IS NO LONGER ANY PARKING AVAILABLE BEHIND THE FUNERAL HOME PER ORDER OF THE CITY OF NEWBURYPORT.
Memorial contributions in David’s name can be made to the Maudslay Arts Center in Newburyport, MA, or the New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton, NH.
