It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we share the passing of David F. LeBlanc, 71, of Newburyport, affectionately known to all as “Papa.” David passed away on Tuesday, February 24th at his home, surrounded by his “favorite three” after a courageous battle with cancer.
David leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Margaret LeBlanc; his daughter Courtney Lucey; and his grandson, Anthony Lucey. Margaret was his devoted caregiver throughout his illness, ensuring he was surrounded with comfort and love until the very end.
Born in Boston in June of 1954, David was the cherished only child of the late Francis LeBlanc and Jennie (English) LeBlanc. He grew up on Cottage St. in Watertown, attending traditional Catholic grammar school before graduating at Watertown High School in the class of 1972. He went on to earn his degree in accounting from the University of Lowell. David lived in Tewksbury and Amesbury before settling in Newburyport, where he is a dedicated parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church.
David was a “true American” in every sense-a productive, honest, law-abiding man with a solid work ethic and an unwavering love for God and his family. A proud member of the NRA and a history enthusiast, he was a man who appreciated the simple things. He was an avid reader, enjoyed target shooting, and never turned down an episode of The Three Stooges. Some of his happiest moments were spent taking road trips across New England with his wife to explore antique shops and fairs.
David had a varied career path, starting as a sales manager at Harvard Coop bookstore in Cambridge, and later working as an accountant for many years in Boston and for the Lawrence Public Schools. Over the last 15 years, he became a local fixture at the Newburyport Market Basket deli, where his welcoming personality and his grandson’s “Clipper sports” recaps made him a favorite among customers.
David will forever be remembered as a kind, loving, humble, and gentle soul. His smile resonated through life, and always made a positive impact on those he met along the way. Everyone who knew David knew his most important and favorite accomplishment in life was helping to raise both his daughter and his grandson. With a tight-knit family of four, Anthony was the absolute love of his life.
David was and always will be Anthony’s number-one fan & best friend. He never missed a hockey, football, or baseball game and spent much of his time behind the wheel with Anthony and his friends. Papa’s Uber services were always appreciated. David was incredibly proud of the outstanding young man Anthony has become-showing heart, strength and kindness to others with strong traditional morals and values just like his grandfather. At the end of the day, David was content at home, relaxing with his family and his beloved beagle by his side.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to his friends, the oncology team at Beth Israel, Dr. Alain-Marc Werner, the Market Basket family & the IC Church for their incredible support.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours at the Twomey, LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport on Sunday March 1, 2026 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church on Monday March 2, 2026 at 10:30 AM, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newburyport.
In lieu of flowers, it was David’s wish that donations be made to his beloved grandson, Anthony Lucey, to support his education. Please email aluceyeducationfund@icloud.com for more information.
