Carol Delgado Obituary

Carol S. (Shopay) Delgado, age 71, passed away April 26, 2021, following a long, and hard fought battle against metastatic breast cancer.  Carol was so strong and uncomplaining to the end and was blessed to have been with her family at the time of her passing.

Born in New Britain, Carol was raised in Bristol, CT, by her parents, Mary and Harry Shopay.  After graduating from Bristol Eastern HS, she attended Windham College in VT.  It was there that she met her life long husband, the love of her life.  After their wedding, they lived in Sachsenhausen, Germany for a couple of years.  When they returned to the US they lived in New England then moved around the country multiple times, until finally settling in Newburyport, MA for the last 36 years, where they raised their family.

Carol is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Ralph “Woody” Delgado, their daughter Sara Delgado Service and her husband Craig Service of Lynnfield, MA and their son Michael Delgado and his wife Kiley Mates Delgado of South Hamilton, MA.  She leaves behind her grandchildren Hayden, Gavin, Emma and Sophie, who she loved with all her heart.  Carol is also survived by her brothers, David Shopay and his wife Rebecca Shopay of Marco Island, FL, and Thomas Shopay of Miami, FL.  She also leaves behind seven nieces and nephews.

Carols love and attention to her family was unparalleled.  She was a very reserved, patient, and stable force in her family.  She always listened and shared her views when asked.  She taught her children to be respectful, caring and always be gracious in winning or losing.  She always gave up her personal time and interests when family needs were requested.  She loved being a Grandmother, and loved her son and daughter in laws.

Carol grew up in an athletically gifted family.  She so enjoyed getting involved in various sports and was always very competitive.  She and her husband were avid skiers and their experiences skiing in Europe, The West, and The Northeast were so rewarding.  She loved playing team tennis (doubles and mixed doubles) at The Racquet Club for 30+ years.  She also enjoyed racquetball, and golf became her strong interest. As time progressed Carol and her husband traded in their skis for golf sticks and spent their partial winters in Vero Beach. She also enjoyed their various boats through the years, sailing out of the AYC in Newburyport. Carol was quite artistic and her true enjoyment and passion was creative sewing.  Her ability to design projects from patchwork quilts, to comforters, to baby blankets, to you name it, she was a perfectionist.  She loved sewing and designing things for her children, grandchildren and friends.  She also loved to cook, using her Mothers recipes through the years.  Making her Moms Pierogis at Christmas time became an annual family tradition.
