Salisbury, MA — It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Barbara M. Merrill, 83, of Salisbury, who passed away on October 23rd, 2023, surrounded by her family at the Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport. Barbara was born on November 14th, 1939, in Newburyport, to the late Charles and Georgiana (Beauparlant) Campbell.
One of ten, Barbara grew up in Newburyport and attended the Immaculate Conception. She adored her parents, and had a special bond with her mother, Georgiana, whom she helped care for up until her passing. At an early age Barbara met the love of her life, Richard Merrill Sr. The young couple wed and went on to have 10 loving children. Barbara was a loving and devoted wife who cared deeply about her husband and children. Barbara was a proud grandmother and great grandmother who took great interest in the athletic, academic achievements, and the everyday life experiences of her grandchildren. Barbara was special in the way that she cared deeply for others regardless of where they came from and was able to see the good in everyone. Generosity and kindness for others always came naturally to Barbara, and her devotion to her husband and children during times of sickness were deeply cherished. Although Barbara’s life was not filled with material riches, her selflessness and appreciation of the simple things was what made her life rich. Barbara was a beacon of several precious and rare qualities: love, compassion, kindness, generosity, devotion, and selflessness. Barbara’s family wishes that her kind and beautiful legacy inspires others to carry on in light of her passing.
Barbara is survived by her brother, Robert Campbell of Newburyport, MA and her children, Linda McNeil and husband, Dan, of Salisbury, MA, Richard Merrill Jr. of Maryville, TN, Michelle Freeman and husband, David, of Newburyport, MA, Jeannie Martin and husband, Carl, of Amesbury, MA, Jeffrey Merrill and Keith Beardsley of Boston, MA, Rhonda Griffin of Salisbury, MA, Mable Lewis and husband, Kevin, of Seabrook, NH, and Chad Merrill and wife, Deana, of Merrimac, MA. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several special nieces, including Georgiana Fazio and her husband Frank of Georgetown, and Patricia Gilman and her late husband Jeff of Gardner, ME, who held a special place in her heart. Barbara was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Richard B. Merrill Sr., her daughter Wendy Merrill, her son Charles Merrill, her granddaughter Tanya Anderson, and 8 of her siblings.
