William Hawes II Obituary

William “Bill” R. Hawes passed away on July 1st, 2019 after a 21 month-long fight against cancer. Bill was born on May 2, 1967 to Helen Lane Hawes and William
“Bill” Hawes, both deceased. He grew up in East Boston and graduated from Boston Latin School in 1986.

Bill loved his coffee, listening to The Late Riser’s Club on WMBR - he rarely missed Joanie’s Thursday morning show, reading (he read EVERYTHING), punk rock, riding with the Riverside Rockets PMC team, and spending time with his family. Bill was quiet, with a clever, sarcastic wit and humor. His brilliant mind made him a master at any type of puzzle. For Bill, The NY Times Crosswords were a breeze and he correctly answered every Jeopardy! question before the contestant hit the buzzer. Bill’s kitchen skills resulted in some mighty fine food. “FD, Bill, FD!”

Bill owned JoyofSocks.com with his wife, Suzanne, which the pair started out of their Boston North End apartment in 1998.

Bill is survived by his wife, Suzanne Mettling Hawes and daughter, Ruby, of Newburyport. He was a loving uncle to Jane and Tommy Mettling, brother-in-law to Tom and Beth Mettling, and son in law to John Thomas and Katherine Mettling. He is also survived by his sister Susan Lefebvre, brother-in-law Matt Lefebvre, and nephew Matthew.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Wednesday July 10, 2019 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. A time to memorialize Bill will be held immediately following the calling hours and all are welcome to attend. Burial will be private at a later date. THERE IS NO LONGER ANY PARKING AVAILABLE BEHIND THE FUNERAL HOME PER ORDER OF THE CITY OF NEWBURYPORT.

In lieu of flowers please donate to Team Riverside Rockets’ PMC. http://profile.pmc.org/TR0104 Sheer determination and stubbornness got Bill through this grueling 192 mile, 2 day ride last year at his oncologist’s astonishment. This year would be have been Bill’s 10th ride.
